Abstract
Increased environmental concerns and the growing demand for sustainable agricultural practices are encouraging the development of more sustainable agricultural management systems. In the field of viticulture, increasing attention is being paid to the use of alternative organic plant protection products, which can reduce dependence on synthetic pesticides while maintaining grape yield and quality. At the same time, high-precision vineyard technologies enable more detailed monitoring of vineyard conditions and spatial variability. Vegetation indices derived from spectral measurements provide valuable information on plant vigor, physiological status, and potential stress. Consequently, the combination of environmentally friendly plant protection methods with modern monitoring tools represents an important step towards sustainable vineyard management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of organic plant protection products on grapevine vigor using NDVI and NDRE vegetation indices. The study was conducted in a vineyard with two grape varieties, representing table grapes and wine grapes. Vegetation monitoring was carried out using a Plant-O-Meter sensor, enabling nondestructive spectral measurements of the grapevine canopy. Measurements were carried out before the application of organic plant protection products (control measurements) and twice after treatment in July, when the plants were fully developed. Spectral data were used to calculate two widely applied vegetation indices, NDVI and NDRE, in order to evaluate changes in plant vigor and physiological status. The results showed variability in vegetation indices across cultivars and observation periods. In table grape cultivars, NDVI values ranged from 0.58 to 0.60, while NDRE values ranged from 0.023 to 0.11. In wine grape cultivars, NDVI values remained stable at 0.73, whereas NDRE values ranged from 0.10 to 0.12. Correlation analysis revealed significant relationships between vegetation indices and production parameters. In table grape cultivars, significant correlations with yield were observed during the first measurement for NDRE (r= 0.99) and NDVI (r= 0.91). In wine grape cultivars, significant correlations were found during the third measurement between NDRE and total acidity (r= 0.898), as well as between NDRE and sugar content (r= 0.926). Two-way ANOVA indicated that cultivar had a significant effect on NDVI values, while NDRE was significantly influenced by cultivar, observation period, and their interaction (p= 0.001). The results demonstrate that NDVI and NDRE can be used as reliable indicators for monitoring vineyard canopy vigor and assessing the impact of organic plant protection products, highlighting their potential as valuable tools for supporting sustainable vineyard management.
