Direct payments have remained the dominant measure of agrarian policy, even after overall reforms, both in the EU and Serbia, and therefore direct payments will be the subject of research in this paper. The research question analyzed in this paper refers to the impact of direct payments on the economic size of standard income of agricultural holdings expressed in EUR, both in the EU and in the Serbia. In line to performed research, it is obvious that direct payments both in the EU and in the Serbia had affected the economic sustainability of agricultural production. In particular, they influenced the increase in the number of agricultural holdings from the categories with the highest amounts of annual - standard income expressed in EUR. However, this agrarian policy measure has been proved ineffective for agricultural holdings with the lowest level of annual income (up to 2,000 EUR), considering that both in the EU and Serbia come to decrease in the number of agricultural farms from mentioned category between the last two agricultural censuses.
