Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of agriculture and the food industry in the economy of the Republic of Serbia. The importance of this sector is shown by the analysis of the participation of: a) the agriculture sector in total gross value added (GVA), b) exports of the agro-food industry in total exports and c) incentives available to farmers and processors. The paper analyzes the period 2016-2018 and the results show that agriculture contributes to the production of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2017 was 6%, while the food sector accounts 4.3% of the total GVA. The share of agricultural and food exports in total exports is high (21.6% in 2016; 18.7% in 2017; 17.5% in 2018) and indicates the comparative advantages of agriculture and food production in exports relative to the rest of the economy. In the structure of rural development measures that are issued annually by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management (MAFWM), incentives for the food sector account for only 2% and 0.4% in total value of planned isubsidies. Exports of the agricultural and food industries have been considered in two aspects: 1) the structure of exports and 2) the export of products by destination (EU (28), CEFTA and Russian Federation). The EU market (28) imported products from Serbia in 2018 almost half of Serbia's total exports (45.7%), CEFTA countries 32.1% and Russian Federation 10.4%. The most represented products in export are: fresh and frozen vegetables and fruits, cereals and products based on cereals and beverages. The importance of writing a work is also reflected in the fact that primary agricultural production provides raw materials for the food sector, while business entities are supplied with quality raw materials. Data from relevant sources were used, which were then processed by the mathematical-statistical method.
