In this chapter, we will analyze circular economy indicators, its advantages and disadvantages, and the results of waste management at the EU and Serbian levels. The purpose of this chapter is to present the historical transition from a linear to a circular economy, with an emphasis on its implementation in EU countries, as well as to showcase the current state of circular economy application in Serbia based on observed indicators. The data used in this research come from secondary sources, primarily extensive scientific literature gathered through desk research. Since the focus is on waste management as the main source of environmental pollution, precise data related to the recycling rate of municipal waste and waste by packaging material type also come from secondary sources (Eurostat, Circular material use rate, 2025b). Data related to Serbia, especially regarding the total amount of waste, categorized by industry and households, were obtained from the electronic database of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia. The analyzed data cover the period from 2013 to 2022. Analysis and commenting on the results was carried out using descriptive statistics. By analyzing the indicators available in the EUROSTAT database (2013–2022), we have reached that the municipal waste recycling rate at the EU level increased by 7.2 p.p. In Serbia, the recycling rate increased from 1% in 2013 to 17.6% in 2022.
