The paper analyses the EU countries and Serbia in context of economic size of farms and structural characteristics of farms (utilized agricultural area, and type of farming), and describes correlation between structural characteristics of farms and economic size of farms. Authors concluded that physical size of the farm and type of farming (structural characteristics of farms) are directly related to the economic size of the farm. Countries with large farms in terms of economics size are also countries with large farms in terms of physical size, and countries with high percentage of specialized farms. Also, authors make suggestions and recommendations to improve the economic position and sustainable competitiveness of small farms in Serbia and Romania, where are farms with smallest economics size. The sources of the data analyzed in the paper are Farm structure survey (abbr. FSS) from 2016 for EU countries, and FSS from 2018 for Serbia. The first data are provided by Eurostat, and second data by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia. Descriptive analysis technique was used for data analysis.
